The catastrophic cyclone Sidr of 2008 caused extensive damage and loss of life in Barguna district. Most parts of Barguna were inundated by high tide and there was a crisis of high ground for burial of dead bodies. In the face of this catastrophe, 29 people were buried in 19 graves of Sidr who lost their lives in the high ground of Gorjanbunia village of Naltana Union No. 10 in Barguna Sadar. The Gorjanbunia Sidr Memorial was built by the district administration of Barguna to pay homage to the memory of all those killed and affected by the Sidr.
