To introduce the Hilsa of Barguna worldwide and to attract the domestic and international tourists to Barguna as an eco-tourist spot, Barguna District Administration and Television Journalists Association had arranged the largest Hilsa festival for the first time in the history of Bangladesh, in the circuit house ground of Barguna, 2nd October, 2019. In this significant festival, the national importance of Hilsa was focused as a geographical indication (GI) product of the country. Besides, to build awareness among the local people and fishermen about the production of Hilsa fish, conservation of mother Hilsa and the jatka and introduction of rivers of Barguna as the sanctuary of Hilsa, various kinds of events like colorful rally, seminar, general knowledge competitions, drama, Jari Gaan , Puthi Path, documentaries on Hilsa were displayed. The special attraction of the festival was the arrangement of selling of the the fresh Hilsa of Bishkhali, Bolesshor and Payra river from the estuary of the sea on the program spot. People of different ages and professions from the nearby districts and upazillas came to enjoy this outstanding program which was held for the first time. There were a lot of stalls having different 100 recipes of Hilsa fish which were greatly praised by the food lovers. People raised their voice to mark Barguna as the district of Hilsa. Mentionable, every year about one lakh metric ton of Hilsa fish is produced in Barguna whose market price is nearly five thousand Crore Tk.
